The right plant is the one that suits the spot — its sun, shade and drainage. Clay itself isn't the problem; unamended clay is. We amend beds before planting and pick plants for the conditions that spot actually has, so they establish instead of struggling.
When is the best time to plant in the Charlotte area?
Fall is the best time to plant most trees and shrubs here — cooler air, warm soil, and a full season of root growth before summer. Warm-season sod like Bermuda and zoysia goes down best from late spring through summer; fescue is a fall job.
